  • Quest: Adds a $6 physician service fee per order (shown on Quest's product pages).
  • Labcorp OnDemand: Check the cart for any added fees.
  • Ulta Lab Tests: Ulta's FAQ says a specimen collection (draw) fee, standard $12.95, is added at checkout.

  • HealthLabs: Check the cart for any added fees.

Availability varies by state. Direct-to-consumer lab testing is not offered everywhere. For example, Quest's consumer site has not offered testing in Arizona, Hawaii or Puerto Rico, and New York, New Jersey and Rhode Island have had restrictions on ordering tests without a clinician. Rules and provider coverage change, so confirm availability for your state at checkout.

What it measures

The A1C test measures the percentage of hemoglobin in your red blood cells that has sugar attached to it. Because red blood cells live about three months, A1C reflects your average blood sugar over roughly the past 2 to 3 months rather than a single moment.

Who orders it

A1C is widely used in diabetes screening and monitoring. People with diabetes or prediabetes often test on a schedule set with their clinician, and others order it to keep an eye on their blood sugar over time.

How to prepare

No fasting is usually required, because A1C reflects a long-term average.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to fast for an A1C test?

Usually not. A1C reflects an average over about 2 to 3 months, so a recent meal has little effect.

How is A1C different from a glucose test?

A glucose test measures your blood sugar at the moment of the draw. A1C estimates your average over the past few months.

How often should A1C be checked?

That depends on your health and goals. A clinician can recommend a schedule that fits you.
