Availability varies by state. Direct-to-consumer lab testing is not offered everywhere. For example, Quest's consumer site has not offered testing in Arizona, Hawaii or Puerto Rico, and New York, New Jersey and Rhode Island have had restrictions on ordering tests without a clinician. Rules and provider coverage change, so confirm availability for your state at checkout.

What it measures

A CMP is a group of about 14 measurements from one blood sample: glucose, calcium, electrolytes (sodium, potassium, chloride, carbon dioxide), kidney markers (BUN, creatinine and usually an eGFR estimate), proteins (albumin, total protein) and liver markers (ALP, ALT, AST, bilirubin).

Who orders it

Clinicians often order a CMP as part of routine care, and people use it to keep a yearly baseline of their kidney, liver and blood sugar markers.

How to prepare

Many providers recommend fasting for 8 to 12 hours (water is fine) because the panel includes glucose. Check the instructions for the test you order.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a CMP and a BMP?

A basic metabolic panel (BMP) has 8 measurements. A CMP adds liver markers and proteins, for about 14 in total.

Do I need to fast for a CMP?

Many providers recommend 8 to 12 hours of fasting because glucose is part of the panel. Follow the instructions for the specific test you buy.

Is a CMP the same as a CBC?

No. A CMP measures chemicals in your blood such as glucose and electrolytes. A CBC counts blood cells. They are often ordered together.
