What it measures
A lipid panel measures the fats in your blood: total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol and triglycerides. Many reports also include non-HDL cholesterol and ratios such as total cholesterol to HDL.
Who orders it
Cholesterol screening is a routine part of adult preventive care. People also order a lipid panel to track their numbers between doctor visits or after changes a clinician has recommended.
How to prepare
Some providers ask for a 9 to 12 hour fast, mainly because triglycerides rise after eating. Others accept non-fasting samples. Check the instructions for the test you order.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to fast before a cholesterol test?
It depends on the provider. Some require a 9 to 12 hour fast and others do not. Follow the instructions for the test you buy.
What does a lipid panel include?
Total cholesterol, LDL, HDL and triglycerides, and often non-HDL cholesterol and ratios.
Is there a more detailed cholesterol test?
Yes. Advanced tests such as ApoB, Lp(a) and lipoprotein fractionation look at cholesterol particles in more detail. See our Heart Health category.
