Availability varies by state. Direct-to-consumer lab testing is not offered everywhere. For example, Quest's consumer site has not offered testing in Arizona, Hawaii or Puerto Rico, and New York, New Jersey and Rhode Island have had restrictions on ordering tests without a clinician. Rules and provider coverage change, so confirm availability for your state at checkout.

What it measures

A total testosterone test measures all the testosterone in your blood, both bound to proteins and free. Some panels add free testosterone and SHBG (sex hormone binding globulin) for more detail.

Who orders it

Testosterone tests are ordered for men and women. People check it when a clinician recommends it, to monitor therapy their clinician manages, or to understand their own hormone levels.

How to prepare

Testosterone is usually highest in the morning, so many providers suggest an early-morning draw. Fasting is not usually required. Follow the provider's instructions.

Frequently asked questions

What time of day should I test testosterone?

Levels are usually highest in the morning, so many providers suggest an early-morning draw.

Total vs. free testosterone: what's the difference?

Total testosterone includes hormone bound to proteins plus the small free fraction. Free testosterone measures only the unbound part. Some panels include both.

Can women order a testosterone test?

Yes. Some providers offer a separate test or method for women. Check the product details.
