What it measures
TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) is made by the pituitary gland and tells your thyroid how much hormone to produce. It is the most common first thyroid test. Thyroid panels add measurements of the thyroid hormones themselves, such as free T4 and free T3, and some add thyroid antibodies (TPO and thyroglobulin antibodies). Panels differ a lot between providers, so check the 'Includes' column.
Who orders it
TSH is a routine thyroid screening test. People who are monitoring a known thyroid condition, or who want a fuller picture, often choose a panel. A clinician can help you decide which markers you need.
How to prepare
No fasting is usually required. Biotin supplements (often in hair, skin and nail products) can interfere with some thyroid tests; Labcorp OnDemand suggests waiting at least 72 hours after your last biotin dose. Ask your clinician before stopping any medication.
Frequently asked questions
Should I get TSH alone or a full thyroid panel?
TSH is the usual first test. A panel adds thyroid hormones and sometimes antibodies. A clinician can tell you which markers make sense for you.
Can supplements affect thyroid test results?
Biotin can interfere with some thyroid tests. Labcorp OnDemand suggests waiting at least 72 hours after your last biotin dose. Talk to your clinician before stopping anything you take.
Do I need to fast for a thyroid test?
Usually not. Follow the instructions given for the test you order.
